HTML5 is an emerging standard for presenting content on the Web, including video. Today, HTML5 is the key to reaching a large part of the fast–growing mobile audience on iOS and Android devices. At the same time, the complexity associated with publishing video across HTML5–compatible devices continues to grow, as the distribution of operating systems and browsers used by these devices has become increasingly fragmented.
This whitepaper presents the findings from a wide–ranging survey of HTML5 video tag usage, browser performance, and compatibility with third–party plug-ins, such as advertising and analytics. The results indicate that any video player that utilizes the HTML5 video tag must account for major variances in all of these areas to ensure consistent playback and stable plug–in behavior across devices.
